We started the day celebrating our 100th day of school. This is the day we have been counting up to since the very first day together. This has been a great way for the Otters to learn and practice the concept of place value, and counting, including skip counting by 2's, 5's, 10's and 20's. We started a giant chart for 100 acts of kindness. The class was able to think of 77 acts so far. This is something we would like to complete next week. For snack, we used ten frames to count out a hundred yummy snack items. For numeracy, the kids work in small groups to add two dice together to get to 100. For free choice, the Otters were given the task of building structures with 100 plastic cups. The building required teamwork, patience, structural engineering and steady hands.
The Otter friendship celebration was in the afternoon. This was a time for the children to join together, engage in interesting centers, and pass out their thoughtful and sweet valentines cards. After all the valentines were passed out, we gathered to observe our popcorn pop. This year we have created such wonderful friendships with our community members. We were able to show how much we care through kind gifts and conversation.
