Nature Walk

This week we will be working in teams to create interesting fairy houses/gardens around our outdoor classroom. Today we went on a nature walk to collect materials for our fairy gardens. We will be using natural materials, modeling clay, and other remeda materials as we create these whimsical homes. Students are welcome to bring in small items from home to add to their creations. Today we got to hear student presentations about Julia Child and Helen Keller. We also enjoyed the nearly empty campus as we had our picnics and played tag amongst the trees. We wrote birthday letters to Nora and met in our math groups today as well.

Pajama Day

Last Friday we had our first read-in. Students wore pajamas and brought in stuffies, blankets, pillows, books and board games. We spent the day building forts, snuggling up to read books, and playing board games with friends. Of course we took breaks from our read-in to enjoy the gorgeous sunshine. When we discovered sprinklers on campus, we couldn’t resist splashing and playing. What great fun! Childhood memories are made of laughter, friendship, and play. We are so grateful to spend these beautiful spring days together.

Inspiring Individuals Presentations

Each day one of our student researchers is invited to present her/his Google Slides presentation about their inspiring individual. Through this process students are learning to utilize Google Slides to present information. They are also gaining experience sharing their knowledge in front of others as they present in a strong, clear voice and field questions from their peers. After each presentation we invite classmates to give compliments to the presenter. It’s been fun to learn about so many inspiring artists, scientists, athletes, and activists. Below you can find photos of the slides from individual presentations. So far we’ve heard presentations about Jane Goodall, Gabby Douglas, Billie Jean King, Malala Yousafzai, and Albert Einstein. We will post more presentations next week.

Artistic Endeavors

This week we’ve been focusing on artistic endeavors as we refine our drawing techniques and experiment with color. Today we learned a little about Jackson Pollock and got to create our own splatter paintings. We listened to different types of music and discussed what emotions the music elicited from us. We attempted to express our emotions through painting.
