Dec 5-9: Culinary Adventures
/ Aja AppelThis week we received a Flat Stanley update from Flat Dragon Unicorn Man in Vienna, Austria. We also wrote letters and sent off new Flat Stanleys to Montana, Washington DC, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, and North Carolina. Some of our Flat Stanley hosts are sending back recipes from their cities and states. On Wednesday we baked a cranberry apple crisp from Seattle, Washington and we learned that apples are Washington state's most valuable crop, providing 60% of the nation's supply. The cranberry industry in Washington is also large and Washington is in the top 5 cranberry producing states (along with Oregon). Both cranberries and apples are seasonal right now, so this seemed like the perfect recipe to kick off our culinary adventures. Throughout this cooking project many Otters learned new cooking vocabulary such aszest. They also learned to use many kitchen tools including a kitchen scale, juicer, peeler, and zester. We gained experience with fractions as we measured ingredients and doubled our recipe. Then we got to enjoy the fruits of our labor, and boy was it delicious! Our cartographers finished their island maps and will be sharing them tomorrow. This week we wrote new warm fuzzies for classmates and got to go visit goats on campus. We also read a story called The Rag Coat and discussed the meaning of gratitude. We talked about how lucky we are to have shelter, food, a quality education, and safe neighborhoods. We talked about how those with extra resources can help others in the community. We also took inventory of the coats, hats, and mittens that we've collected for Family Promise. In writer's workshop we've been working on adding the date to our pages and on adding descriptive words. Our authors used some great vocabulary words this week including swooped, nibbled, accelerated, furious, raced, terrifying, robbed, hangry, and nervited. As usual, on Friday students had an opportunity to share items, stories, and photos important to their lives.
