Planning a Play and Literacy Volunteers
/ Aja AppelLast week we wrapped up our Me & My Community unit with a lovely Celebration of Community. This week students got to take home the 3D community buildings they created. You can see photos of their structures below. This week during our classroom meetings students have been discussing the idea of performing a play. We’ve been reading a variety of classic tales and one of our class favorites is the story of Anansi and the Moss Covered Rock. Students particularly liked the humor in this classic tale. We’ve been learning about some of the elements of a story including setting, characters, and plot. As we read and reread this story, students developed a list of characters and settings that we would need for our play. On Thursday we assigned roles based on the student preference sheets that they filled out. Then our set designers teamed up to begin planning sets and props while the actors began rehearsing lines. We will continue working on this play during content time next week as well. We plan to record the play to post on our blog in the coming weeks.
This week we were thrilled to invite parent volunteers into our classroom to help with our literacy block. These volunteers helped students with word work, read with individual students, and helped students edit and publish their stories. What fun! We got to add eight newly published student stories to our classroom library this week. Outside students invented a version of basketball that involves a tunnel and balls. During our math block our first graders have been using number lines to add numbers up to 20 while our second graders have been learning to make precise measurements with a variety of measuring tools.
