Light Explorations

The Otters were thrilled to be back together after two weeks apart! The excitement was palpable and energy levels were high this week. We enjoyed time reconnecting, building, reading, and writing together.  This week we launched our science unit on light. We have been using flashlights to explore how light interacts with a variety of materials. We learned that materials interact differently with light depending on whether they are transparent, translucent, or opaque. Today students worked in teams to complete different challenges, such as figuring out how to make light hit a target without pointing the flashlight at the target. Students were excited to discover that mirrors, CDs, and foil can reflect light in interesting ways. We also discovered that when light interacts with certain materials, it creates rainbows on the ceiling and walls. We can’t wait to learn more about light next week!
