Inspiring Individuals

This week we launched our Inspiring Individuals unit. We began reading and learning about a variety of inspiring individuals including Ruby Bridges, Eugenie Clark, Beverly Cleary, Amelia Earhart, Thomas Edison, Jim Henson, Billie Jean King, Sacagawea, and Marie Curie. We discussed the character traits of these individuals. During writers' workshop students wrote about an inspiring individual in their own lives. They practiced editing their own papers and then learned how to do peer editing as well. Several students also finished up writers' workshop stories and shared those with the group. During content time we've been learning about Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. Students are practicing their realistic drawing techniques as we emulate some of Frida's famous portrait pieces. For this particular art piece students are using pencil shading, sharpies, and oil pastels. This week in math students learned how to accurately measure and record measurements on graphs. In our cedar classroom students used their gross motor muscles and coordination as they attempted to cross the monkey bars. We've been using our new monkey bar structure for a week now and already many students are improving how far they can make it across!
