Preschool Buddies
/ Aja AppelOne of our highlights this week was starting buddy reading with the preschool classes. As a class we talked about what it means to be a leader and a role model. Students carefully selected books that they thought would be interesting for their preschool buddies. Then they practiced reading those books with accuracy, fluency, and good expression. Otters did some great perspective-taking as they predicted that some books that are engaging for our students wouldn't not be as engaging for their preschool buddies. We read with our Seal buddies on Tuesday afternoon and our Dolphin buddies on Thursday afternoon. Otter students were glowing with pride at getting to be "big buddy" readers. We will continue to meet with our buddy readers on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons for about 10-15 minutes each session. This week we baked the apple pie recipe that we received from Jace's friend in Washington. Students gained experience peeling and slicing apples, measuring ingredients, using different kitchen tools (peelers and pastry cutters), and rolling out pastry dough. Most students thought the pie was delicious. Thursday afternoon we went to the library to check out new books. We are so lucky that the public library is only a five minute walk from our school. This week we also finished our math assessments and our Frida Kahlo art pieces. During our choice time this week Claire led a drawing class for Otters, Luke taught us how to drive his remote control car, and William brought in a football so we could play catch. During our word work time this week we practiced reading and spelling words that have ce (ex- trace, price, place) and ge (example- age, cage, strange). We also learned some words that are the exceptions to the normal "sneaky, bossy e" rule (ex- have, love, give, some, come, none).
